ACTION NEEDED TODAY: Concerning TN legislation hearing tomorrow

Posted 12 days ago

Dear MTAPRN member,

Senate Bill 333/House Bill 644 is scheduled to be heard in both the Senate Health & Welfare Committee and the House Health Subcommittee tomorrow, Wednesday, March 26 at 12 p.m. An amendment has been proposed that would significantly impair access to care in Tennessee and erode efficiency in the health care system. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners® (AANP) is working with our state organization member, the Tennessee Nurses Association and other partners in Tennessee, to push back on this bill. Legislators need to hear from nurse practitioners (NPs) on this bill today!

This legislation would:

  • Require collaborating physicians to be board-certified in the same specialty as their collaborating nurse practitioner, worsening the current health provider shortage.

  • Impose intense supervision requirements on NPs with less than 36 months of practice, including constant onsite supervision, mandatory 100% chart review within 24 hours, and immediate availability of a supervising provider upon patient request.

  • Reduce the number of qualified healthcare providers, especially affecting rural and underserved communities, making it harder for early-career NPs to practice in Tennessee.

  • Set Tennessee back compared to states advancing NP independence, adding unnecessary barriers and reducing healthcare efficiency.

What you can do to help:

  • Forward this email to any APRN you know and encourage them to take action.
  • Contact your legislators TODAY to oppose SB 333/HB 644 and protect patient access to quality care.

  • Consider calling members of the Senate Health Committee and House Health Subcommittee to voice your opposition directly.

  • Attend the committee meeting tomorrow at 12 p.m. demonstrating strong NP advocacy and solidarity.

  • Please send an email to mtaprnpresident@gmail.com if you need help with talking points when speaking to the committee members.

Sincerely,

MTAPRN Board
